Welcome to the world of deep relaxation

From Tuesday 28th November I am going to be running a Restorative Yoga class from my studio at home.

I have had some inquires:-" what exactly is Restorative Yoga?".

The function of Restorative Yoga is to release deep held tensions in the body and to begin to manage those things that cause us stress.

Living in our busy urban C21st world it is often difficult to resolve the things that stress us. Responding to the fight-flight or freeze respose of our adrenalised body sometimes we cant 'shake off' the tensions - so what do we do? We carry then around with us ! Whether it is lifting our tight shoulders to our ears, causing back pain and headaches, or getting into bed with a mind over filled with thoughts all rattling around for attention and wondering why sleep does not come easily.

Here is a quote from Judith Hanson Lasater:-

Whatever the stressor, the mind alerts the body that danger is present. In response, the adrenal glands, located above the kidneys, secrete catecholamine hormones. These adrenaline and noradrenalin hormaones act upon the autonomic nervous system, as the body prepares for fight or flight. Heart rate, blood pressure, mental alertness, and muscular tension are increased.......the body shuts down the systems that are not a priority in the immediate moment, including digestion, elimination, growth, repair and reproduction."

We may over time develop high blood pressure, ulcers, back pain, headaches, reproductive problems, depression. Any or all of these conditions may make you more stressed. So the cycle of tiredness, irritability, poor digestion+ elimination, being run down and catching colds and viruses just continues.

Do you recognise any of these symptoms!

Restorative Yoga is a slower, floor based style of Yoga developed by BKS Iyengar. Using props such as bolsters and blankets to support the body. The asanas are longer held. Benefiting our organs, our blood pressure, our endocrine system, and slowing our little heart down too!

So although we might understand the benefits of slowing down. More quality of life than quantity- we want to change our fast paced life - but we want to change it NOW!

This is where Restorative Yoga is a real winner. One class will have an effect. You will feel relaxed physically, with a quieter less reactive mind, calmer and more compassionate. Over time , with regular practice, patterns will change and you will develop tools to recognise and tame your stressors. Your shoulders will ease and you will drop into bed and fall into a deep sleep.
